Got a Mac, Get Monolingual…

I have been running on disk space for a while now on my MacBook. I bought mine back when they first came out. My MacBook came with the 2 Ghz processor, 512 RAM and  a whopping 60 Gb hard drive. Not long after that I purchased a RAM upgrade kit from Crucial which bumped up my RAM to 2 Gb. Yet, still I’ve been filling up this hard drive pretty quickly and I have to constantly keep deleting apps or files that I don’t use often due to the lack of space. It’s not Apple’s fault since they gave you tons of software out of the box. I love iLife by the way. Well, as disk space is getting low I started looking around to buy another hard drive to replace my current one. Since hard drives are rather cheap these days I figured it wouldn’t be a bad investment to do so. Considering a little over a $100 I can get around 320 Gb hard drive and wouldn’t have to worry about filling it up for quite a while.

Now, onto why I’ve made this post. I discovered some really kewl software called Monolingual on TUAW earlier today and they have a really good article about it. Basically, it provides the ability to remove unnecessary or unused languages and architecture versions from your applications that are installed on your Mac.

For instance, let’s say your like myself in which the primary language you ever intend to use on your Mac is English. By default the majority of your applications come with languages such as French, Spanish, Japanese, Latin and so forth. These extra languages that go unused take up disk space. In fact, after removing all the extra languages except, of course English, I recovered 4.6 Gb of disk space. Kewl eh?

Check it out, visit Monolingual’s site, but don’t take my word for it.

( I loved watching Reading Rainbow when I was kid.)
