Got a Mac, Get Monolingual…

I have been running on disk space for a while now on my MacBook. I bought mine back when they first came out. My MacBook came with the 2 Ghz processor, 512 RAM and  a whopping 60 Gb hard drive. Not long after that I purchased a RAM upgrade kit from Crucial which bumped up my RAM to 2 Gb. Yet, still I’ve been filling up this hard drive pretty quickly and I have to constantly keep deleting apps or files that I don’t use often due to the lack of space. It’s not Apple’s fault since they gave you tons of software out of the box. I love iLife by the way. Well, as disk space is getting low I started looking around to buy another hard drive to replace my current one. Since hard drives are rather cheap these days I figured it wouldn’t be a bad investment to do so. Considering a little over a $100 I can get around 320 Gb hard drive and wouldn’t have to worry about filling it up for quite a while.

Now, onto why I’ve made this post. I discovered some really kewl software called Monolingual on TUAW earlier today and they have a really good article about it. Basically, it provides the ability to remove unnecessary or unused languages and architecture versions from your applications that are installed on your Mac.

For instance, let’s say your like myself in which the primary language you ever intend to use on your Mac is English. By default the majority of your applications come with languages such as French, Spanish, Japanese, Latin and so forth. These extra languages that go unused take up disk space. In fact, after removing all the extra languages except, of course English, I recovered 4.6 Gb of disk space. Kewl eh?

Check it out, visit Monolingual’s site, but don’t take my word for it.

( I loved watching Reading Rainbow when I was kid.)

My Dogs on YouTube…

Well I’ve done it. I’ve just uploaded my first video to YouTube. Quality sucks big time but it doesn’t matter. Just another geeky moment. Well, not to geeky since I was using Apple’s iMovie which makes the process so quick and easy. Also for ya’ll winders guys out there. It was a two click process. Click here to view the movie on YouTube.

Ode to Joy…

For most people who know me quite well have learned that I love to watch anime and read manga. Gunslinger Girls was a particular anime I really enjoyed. In the final episode of the series the group of girls began singing “Ode to Joy” from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. I have found this really intriguing and started a search for the best choral version. During my search I found a video from the Gunslingers Girls final episode in which they are singing the choral version. I thought I might share the link with you. Snorkeling under Copper Burst…

I just received in the mail today my first Sheaffer Admiral Snorkel and I must say it lays down a beautiful wet line. I was so excited that I went out and bought a bottle of Private Reserver Ink’s Copper Burst. I think I’ve found my new daily writer. I think at this point I’ll back off modern pens and stick with the vintage for awhile. So far I’ve seen equal or better results with the olders pen than the more expensive modern pens. Although, I still would like to get my hands on a Pilot Vanishing Point I think I’m satisfied for now.

Drop in the Bucket

I was with some co-workers going to lunch one day and we were listening to the song, “Country Boy Can Survive” and a part of the song intrigued me. The lyrics were:

“…But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife
For 43 dollars my friend lost his life
Id love to spit some beechnut in that dudes eyes
And shoot him with my old 45
Cause a country boy can survive
Country folks can survive…”

After I heard that I told my co-workers. “I’d like to do that one day, spit beechnut in some dudes eyes. I think I’ll add that to my bucket list.”

They laughed.

Twinkle or Twitter Me…

ver the past few weeks I’ve heard and saw references to Twitter. I’m not going to explain what twitter is, of course, most people know what it is by now or you can google it. So, I recently joined up on twitter. At first my experience was a little confusing. I downloaded a twitter client for my iPhone called Twinkle. I signed up and I noticed that they’re were not a lot of people using this service. I thought to my self, hmm. Then I finally noticed the option in Twinkle to turn on Twitter. That is when the light bulb turned on. Twinkle and Twitter are two different networks. Overall, I find this method of social networking less daunting versus the likes of Facebook and Myspace. Well, Facebook wasn’t that bad but I loathed Myspace.

Your welcome to follow me on Twinkle and Twitter. Just look for my username gwcisco or click here for my profile on twitter.com.
